Herbal Medicine Making Plants are our allies, here on Earth to help us heal. Practicing herbal medicine is our birthright, practiced by our ancestors for many generations before us. This workshop will introduce you to the wonderful world of plant medicine, briefly discussing plant identification, wildcrafting, sustainability, and intuitive plant relationships. We will then focus on how to make medicinal plant and mushroom preparations, extracting a plant's essence into a medicine with the most effective method. We will go over how to make tinctures, infused vinegars, elixirs, cordials, salves, honeys, syrups, teas, and decoctions. There will also be a basic introduction to aromatherapy, sharing how to effectively and safely use aromatic medicine.
Reishi Strauss grew up in the Appalachian mountains of southwestern Virginia, learning the basics of traditional western herbalism from various teachers and the plants themselves. In the summer of 2016 she drove her van cross-country to attend school at Bastyr University, where she takes courses in botanical medicine, mycology, ethnobotany, pharmacognosy, the history of herbal medicine, and more. She specializes in wildcrafting, intuitive plant medicine, medicine making, aromatherapy, and medicinal mushrooms. A yoga teacher and ecstatic dance practitioner, Reishi also weaves breathwork, meditation, and sensory practices into her practice of plant medicine. Reishi has taught plant identification walks and workshops at Cascadia Festival, Blessed Coast, Bastyr Herb and Food Fair, and Firefly Earth Skills Gathering.
